Those of us who live in Lower Michigan have become accustomed to show people where we are by pointing to a spot on our right hand. Our state is shaped like a mitten, so we, Michiganders, carry a map with us at all times. The folks who live in the Flint-Tri Cities area refer to their portion of the state as "the Thumb" for obvious reasons.
I own the Munro House Bed and Breakfast in Jonesville. Not many people know where Jonesville is--even people who have lived in Michigan all of their lives. It just happens that Jonesville is located approximately where 2 creases in my palm form an "X". When I am out of town, and people ask me where I'm from, I just show them on my personal map and tell them that "X marks the spot".
